What do specialists think of the clothing?

The treatment of people with moderate-severe and severe atopic eczema (constitutional eczema (CE)) is complicated. Usually various measures are used together to obtain improvement. For example, the advice is to apply different ointments to the dry skin. In addition, advice is given to avoid contact with water. The patient is given an emollient such as a shower / bath oil instead of soap; anti-inflammatory creams or ointments such as corticosteroids to put on the inflamed skin. Possibly sedating antihistamines for itching, which can lead to insomnia and nocturnal unrest and bandages to prevent scratching and its’ negative effects. And dressings because of the better effect of these local treatments by their occlusive effect. With such a package of measures, it is not easy for the prescribing doctor to estimate the exact contribution of bandages separately.

The practitioners from the guideline working group Constitutional Eczema of the NVDV are of the opinion that bandages made of thin, smooth fibres clearly add value because they do not cause irritation in the hyperreactive skin of patients with CE. This mainly concerns situations in which people with moderate and severe CE and a large affected surface of CE, suffer from itching and use long-term class 2-3 dermatocorticosteroids (and where it is not possible to reduce the frequency of lubrication or the corticosteroid level).*

In a study by the VMCE into dressing materials, many parents mentioned that as a major advantage of modern dressings for their children: finally they sleep through … “
